The promise of science has never been brighter. The scientific gains made in advancing human health over the past few years have been truly incredible. Much of this progress has originated from the brilliant scientists and clinicians working at my peer companies in the biotech sector. Yet there is so much more to do. Over the past two years, economic pressures have added challenges to the already inherently risky business of drug discovery and development, especially for emerging biotech companies. However, even in a volatile market, we are driven to find solutions for patients, making it vital for biotechs to push through these challenges to make new discoveries and deliver treatments to patients in need. After all, scientific progress marches on independently of the ephemeral nature of market conditions.

Thriving as a biotech company requires a multifaceted approach, including establishing a clear strategic vision, making bold decisions, and building a team with deep expertise and an innovation orientation that is empowered to act. These principles are guiding Cullinan Oncology as we advance and expand our diverse oncology portfolio.

Establishing a Target-Driven Strategic Approach to Build a Multi-Modality Diversified Pipeline

At Cullinan Oncology, we take a modality-agnostic targeted oncology approach. First, we identify high impact cancer targets and then pursue the best modality to address each identified target. We focus on molecules that either activate the immune system or inhibit key oncogenic drivers, and undertake rigorous early experimentation to ensure we only advance highly differentiated molecules. As a result of our unique discovery model, we now have a broad and deep pipeline comprising eight assets across hematologic and solid tumor indications, each with the potential to be the best or first in their class.

Our programs range from engineered therapeutic proteins to innovative monoclonal antibodies, as well as kinase inhibitors and protein degraders designed to target both the tumor and tumor microenvironment. Taking a modality-agnostic targeted oncology approach rather than limiting ourselves to a single platform allows us to build a diverse pipeline with multiple shots on goal, with the ultimate aim of delivering transformative medicines that have the greatest potential to positively impact patients with cancer.

Leading With Bold and Informed Decision Making

Efficient and effective drug discovery and development means constantly being informed by what the science tells us, and then taking decisive action with a focus on speed of execution. It’s not trial and error – it’s trial and action. At Cullinan Oncology, we put this into practice in two ways. First, we define high hurdle go/no-go decision points early in development to expeditiously bring forward only the most promising assets. This rigorous approach to decision making is a key element in ensuring efficiency in the development processes. Second, we make sure we front-load as much scientific experimentation as we can early into our programs so that our subsequent decisions are informed by the best information. As an example, through our robust translational research approach, we have a deep understanding of mechanisms of action, dosing parameters, and mitigations of toxicity in the pre-clinical phase to fully inform our approach in the clinic.

Bringing Together the Right Expert Talent

The promise of a pipeline is only as good as the experts who advance it. When you have the requisite expertise in house and empower and support your team, it creates a space for team members to fully unlock their potential and bring the best versions of themselves to their work. Over the last year, Cullinan Oncology has been in growth mode, doubling in size, advancing its pipeline into the clinic, and working towards becoming a fully integrated, commercial stage biotech company. We know that the best researchers and drug developers are attracted to promising science and the opportunity to make a difference for patients, underpinned by a culture that embodies an entrepreneurial and collaborative spirit.

During his remarks on the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, President Biden called on the science and medical communities to work together and bring the boldest thinking to the fight against cancer. Collectively, we all must continue to work to turn promising molecules into transformative medicines, ultimately benefiting patients and families who are in need.

At Cullinan Oncology, our strategic approach has allowed us to grow significantly and advance our science even in the face of market challenges. With a robust cash position, up to five programs in the clinic by next year, a clear strategic direction, and a remarkably talented team, we look forward to creating new standards of care in the oncology space that we hope will transform the lives of patients and inspire other emerging biotechs to do the same.
