Stryker will funnel around $400 million (£300 million) in a “strategic” investment in CMR Surgical and its robot surgery tech.
The deal includes an exclusive U.S. commercial agency agreement for CMR’s Versius portfolio. This tech works as a modular and portable surgical robot designed to make it easier for hospitals and surgeons to give patients access to minimal access surgery.
Stryker will under the pact become the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius portfolio, while U.K.-based CMR Surgical will continue to lead portfolio development and commercialization in markets outside the United States.
Stryker’s exclusive acquisition option gives the company the opportunity to buy 100% of CMR Surgical’s outstanding equity in the future.
The agreement brings together CMR Surgical’s globally established soft-tissue robotics portfolio and clinical experience with Stryker’s scale, customer relationships, and commercial execution.
The alliance comes as demand for robotic-assisted surgery continues to grow globally. The American medtech Intuitive saw an 18% increase in robotic-assisted da Vinci procedures in 2025 compared to 2024.
CRM’s Versius has been FDA-cleared to perform cholecystectomy procedures. The company has also filed a 510(k) submission for benign gynecologic indications.
“Soft-tissue robotics is a high-growth adjacency and a natural extension of Stryker’s strengths in endoscopy, visualization and enabling technologies,” said Andy Pierce, Group President, Medsurg and Neurotechnology, Stryker, in a statement.
The deal comes just days after Stryker veteran Spencer Stiles announced he will take up the chief executive role as its former CEO Kevin Lobo moves up into the boardroom.
“This strategic alliance is a significant milestone for CMR and a strong endorsement of the technology, clinical experience and global business we have built,” added Massimiliano Colella, CEO of CMR Surgical, in a release.
“Stryker’s investment will give us additional strength to accelerate innovation and the continued global expansion of the Versius portfolio, while its scale and deep customer relationships create a significant growth opportunity in the United States.”
