Flatiron Health's cloud-based electronic health record for cancer patients will soon be interoperable with Varian Medical Systems' Aria oncology information system under the terms of a strategic alliance between the two companies.
The companies aim to further develop their software platform to deliver a suite of cloud-based oncology data analytics products and services in the latest use of Big Data in the fight against cancer.
The interoperability of the two systems will be achieved later this year. Prior to that, Varian Medical is supposed to begin offering Flatiron's OncoEMR electronic health records to its customers. It joins an array of Flatiron vendors, including GE Healthcare, insurer Athena Health, Cardinal Health and several others.
On OncoEMR's website, Flatiron stresses the electronic record's specialized nature, saying it offers advanced treatment support by providing information about the latest clinical research and various treatment pathways. That makes it complementary to Varian's versatile Aria Oncology Information System, which offers clinical decision support, image management, and drug ordering assistance among its features. Aria is used in more than 3,800 cancer centers around the world.
Both companies already collaborate with other players in the oncology ecosystem. OncoEMR distributes information provided by Via Oncology, while the Aria offers billing services and financial management in collaboration with Unlimited Systems.
"Together, we will help empower the oncology community to advance the delivery of cancer care," Varian Vice President Sukhveer Singh said in a statement. "This initiative is an important part of Varian's efforts to build a comprehensive, cloud-based software platform that enables care coordination and value-based medicine."
Varian also sells imaging workstations and X-ray components. Flatiron also offers an oncology data analytics and billing platform.
