Startups like Kinetic Medical take the lead in the Chinese device market

China's Kinetic Medical is taking its cues from foreign companies like Medtronic ($MDT) but has local advantages as well. While co-founder Jay Qin says its products are of comparable quality as international brands, he believes Kinetic's popularity stems from better understanding of domestic practices, insuring his company was able to grab up loyal customers from its inception as a small, three-man startup in 2005. Kinetic not only has signature devices, such as its osteoporosis treatment product, but also an intrinsic understanding of the Chinese market. Unlike foreign companies, Kinetic knew from the start that to get Chinese hospitals and doctors interested in their products, they had to go through a third party distributor--key to their initial success.
