Vancouver-based Neovasc has completed the first-in-human implantation of Tiara, a transcatheter mitral valve designed to eliminate mitral regurgitation and improve heart function without the need for cardiac bypass. The surgery took place at the end of January at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. Neovasc competes with rivals both small and large in the bid to develop mitral valve treatment devices. Abbott ($ABT) is among the biggest competitors, winning FDA approval last October for its MitraClip cardiac device, which is delivered via catheter through the femoral artery in the leg to clip together parts of the mitral valve.
