Masimo to acquire SEDline

Irvine, CA-based Masimo (NASDAQ: MASI) has agreed to buy SEDLine, a manufacturer of brain function monitoring devices. The acquisition marks Masimo's commercial entry into the brain function monitoring market. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Privately-held and backed with a financial investment from Masimo last year, SEDLine was formed with the mission to advance brain function monitoring to improve the care of patients under anesthesia or sedation, according to a Masimo statement.

Covidien (NYSE:COV) acquired SEDLine competitor Aspect Medical in November 2009 for $210 million, Mass Device reports Aspect Medical's BIS technology is a direct competitor with SEDLine's EEG brain function monitors.
