Device diagnoses brain injury from drop of blood

A collaboration between the East and the West is using biomarkers to develop a point of care device that could diagnose traumatic brain injury (TBI) at the site of the accident, helping doctors make the right decisions for treating the patient. Traumatic brain injury is one of the most common causes of death and disability in the world, and fast treatment can make all the difference in patient outcome.

The collaboration, between A*STAR's Institute of Microelectronics, based in Singapore, and U.S. company SFC Fluidics, will create a portable diagnostic tool that detects up to three biomarkers from a drop of blood.

The device is designed to be easy to use, including an alert indicating the severity of the injury, allowing it to be used on-site by people with limited training.

"Building on our core capabilities in silicon-based microfluidics and biosensor technology, we can help our partner create innovative diagnostic tools to improve TBI treatment," says Dim-Lee Kwong, executive director of the Institute of Microelectronics, SFC Fluidics' partner.
