New York's First New Hospital in Two Decades Deploys EMC and VMware for Private Cloud

Virtualizes More Than 80 Percent of its Servers; Chooses EMC Over IBM and NetApp; and Reduces Backup from Days to Hours
HOPKINTON, Mass., Nov. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced that Orange Regional Medical Center, a leading 450-bed multi-facility hospital system in New York State, has deployed EMC and VMware solutions to build a secure private cloud environment that is easy to manage and scales to meet future business and clinical needs.  Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is currently consolidating two existing campuses into the first new freestanding hospital built in New York State in more than 20 years.

"As our business continues to evolve, we needed a solution that would enable us to transform our IT infrastructure while keeping our operations running smoothly for optimum patient care delivery," said Shafiq Rab M.D., Vice President, Information Technology & Chief Information Officer.  "EMC and VMware are providing the private cloud infrastructure to enable our campus consolidation and transformation to electronic care processes today while helping our physicians retain access to the information they need when they need it."

Since deploying VMware's vSphere, Orange Regional Medical Center has virtualized more than 80 percent of its servers, thereby reducing the costs and complexities associated with the physical infrastructure and enabling it to deploy servers faster to meet its dynamic business and clinical needs.

"As technology advancements enable us to move toward the private cloud, I and my CIO peers are ready to trade in our struggles for integration, simplicity, efficiency and seamless operations," said Rab.  "EMC and VMware just plain get it.  Their technologies go hand-in-hand to reduce our expense and complexity and will provide us with the control needed for a secure and trusted private cloud."

To efficiently store and quickly retrieve electronic medical records from its Epic application and other clinical and business information needed in real-time, Orange Regional Medical Center also implemented EMC CLARiiON® and EMC Celerra® storage platforms with high-speed solid state drives (SSDs).  Additionally, ORMC deduplicated its physical and virtual environment and strengthened its backup, recovery and archive strategy with EMC Avamar® deduplication software and EMC Centera® content-addressed storage.  As a result, ORMC reduced its backup process from days to hours.

"As we continue to transition to a 'paper light' environment, we need to guarantee that the information we are storing is always there," said Rab.  "We performed an in-depth evaluation of the solutions offered by various companies including EMC. We unanimously agreed that EMC solutions provide us with the trust and peace of mind we need."

EMC has by far the most integrated solution support for VMware environments of any vendor in the market and continues to underscore its position as the number one choice in storage for VMware environments with customers choosing EMC two times as often as any other vendor.
