Yesterday Maryland became one of only four states to fund stem cell research, passing legislation that will grant up to $15 million in funds to both private biotech researchers and universities. Decisions regarding public funding of stem cell research has fallen to the states following a 2001 decision by the Bush administration to limit federal funding of this research. Not surprisingly, this proved to be one of the most controversial bills tackled by the Maryland legislature this year and compromises had to be made by those on both sides of the issue.
