Lake Norman Oncology Among First Nationally to Successfully Attest to Meaningful Use of Electronic Medical Records

Lake Norman Proves Meaningful Use with OncoEMR™ in First Week Attestation Available

LOS ALTOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Altos Solutions, Inc. today announced that Lake Norman Oncology of Mooresville, NC, became one of the first oncology practices in the US to successfully attest to meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR) in the Medicare Electronic Health Records Incentive Program. Using OncoEMR™, Altos Solutions’ flagship oncology electronic medical record, Lake Norman began adapting its practice in January 2011 to prove that it met or exceeded the Medicare requirements and attested to meaningful use in the first week of the Medicare program. With a maximum of $44,000 in incentive payments available over the next five years to eligible providers who meet attestation requirements, the implications are significant for oncologists and other physicians.

To attest to meaningful use, eligible professionals must report numerator, denominator, and exclusion results, if applicable, for the meaningful use objectives and attest that they have successfully met the requirements of the program. Once eligible professionals have successfully completed an online submission through the Attestation System, they qualify for a Medicare EHR incentive payment.

“Proving meaningful use of our electronic medical record is a major accomplishment for our practice,” said David Eagle, MD of Lake Norman Oncology. “We had a tremendous advantage in partnering with Altos Solutions, using OncoEMR, the first oncology EMR to be certified for meaningful use measurements. OncoEMR was well designed to support us gathering the data and presenting it to prove attestation. We worked as a close team and the results show this—we successfully proved meaningful use the first time and within the first week that the attestation process was available.”

“Lake Norman Oncology has been great partners in this historic process. Being among the very first practices in the country is a real tribute to how far sighted they have been in preparing and planning. The attestation process is challenging but they understood the importance and were well organized in their preparations,” commented Warren M. Dodge, president of Altos Solutions, Inc. “We had a great collaborative process in which we refined OncoEMR while helping Lake Norman prepare. OncoEMR is web based and the beauty of this is that the upgrades identified in working with Lake Norman are already available to all 700+ of our other customers because we make these upgrades on a regular basis after hours.”
