Genzyme sees big returns from small drug market

Genzyme sees a potential blockbuster in Myozyme, an experimental therapy for a rare enzyme deficiency called Pompe disease. Only about 10,000 people suffer from the disease, but analysts said that Genzyme has made great strides in generating big sales from small niches. Some estimate that Myozyme, which cost $500 million to develop, could earn $1 billion per year in sales. The company has already begun building production facilities in expectation of a positive FDA ruling by the end of January.
