WILMINGTON, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Jefferson Awards for Public Service were awarded to five AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) employees Monday, recognizing significant contributions to their local communities through volunteerism. The Jefferson Awards is a national recognition program that honors individuals across the country who perform outstanding community and public service.
Pharmaceutical sales specialist Kendra Neely-Martin was recognized for her work with at-risk girls in St. Louis through the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Neely-Martin will attend the National Jefferson Awards Ceremony in Washington D.C. in June, when she will be considered for its national award.
“As we reviewed the nominations, it was abundantly clear that AstraZeneca employees spend countless hours and energy to improve the well-being of their communities across the country,” said David Nicoli, vice president, Corporate Affairs, AstraZeneca and Jefferson Awards trustee and member of the National Board of Selectors. “We could not be more proud of the contributions our employees are making in their hometowns.”

As chair of the educational development for the St. Louis Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of DST, Neely-Martin oversees the Delta Academy, a national program created to provide health and wellness training as well as instill the values necessary to build a solid community.
“As a mentor under our education thrust, Kendra proved to be a visionary and ultimately took over as chairperson of our educational development program,” said Iris G. Fersuson, former chapter president of the St. Louis Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of DST. “She is tireless in her devotion to the mission of lifting up our community and especially our children.”
The Jefferson Awards for Public Service were founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, former US Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Delawarean Sam Beard to create a Nobel Prize for public service.
