FDA approves skin patch for depression

The FDA has approved Somerset Pharmaceutical's skin patch for depression. A joint venture of Mylan Laboratories and Watson Pharmaceuticals, Somerset's Emsam offers a patch version of monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Conditional approval was given in 2004 but researchers were asked to provide more data before the agency would provide full approval. The patch will come with a safety warning about the threat of high blood pressure. Bristol-Myers Squibb has the marketing rights for the patch in the U.S.
