C&L: NovaDel won't extend Shangold's contract

NovaDel has notified CEO Dr. Gary Shangold that his employment agreement will not be extended at the end of its term on December 22, 2005. In addition, its board of directors has elected Robert G. Savage to the position of non-executive chairman of the board.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals has appointed Vikas Sinha as senior vice president and CFO. Sinha joins Alexion from Bayer, where he was most recently vice president and CFO of Bayer Pharmaceuticals, USA.

Phyllis Piano has been hired by Amgen as vice president, corporate communications and philanthropy. Piano joins Amgen after serving as vice president, corporate affairs and communications at Raytheon.

Mathew Hahn, PhD, has been named chief science & technology officer of Accelrys. In 1999, Dr. Hahn co-founded SciTegic, which Accelrys subsequently acquired in September 2004. Dr. Hahn re-joined Accelrys as general manager of the SciTegic subsidiary.

Ivan Horak, MD, Immunomedics' executive vice president of research and development and chief scientific officer, has terminated his employment with the company. Horak was named executive vice president of research and development and chief scientific officer of Enzon Pharmaceuticals.

ViroLogic named William J. Welch as senior vice president and chief commercial officer. Before joining ViroLogic, Welch was a corporate officer and vice president of sales and marketing for La Jolla Pharmaceuticals.

Brent Keller has been named general manager of Kreatech Biotechnology USA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kreatech Holding.

Smith & Nephew has appointed Dr. Peter Heeckt, MD, PhD, to the newly created position of Chief Medical Officer for the company's Orthopaedics division. Prior to joining Smith & Nephew, Dr. Heeckt served as the medical director for Fresenius ProServe, a German healthcare company.

PPD has appointed David Brown, PhD, as senior director of pharmacovigilance and epidemiology. Prior to joining PPD, Brown held a number of senior positions in epidemiology and global safety surveillance, including epidemiology team leader for oncology and neurosciences at Wyeth Research.

ViaCell has named Anne Marie Cook to the position of general counsel. Ms. Cook joins ViaCell from Biogen Idec, where she was employed for 13 years, most recently as vice president, chief corporate counsel.

Arriva Pharmaceuticals named Gregory J. Ikonen as general counsel. Ikonen joins Arriva from Heller Ehrman, where he was a partner in the Intellectual Property Transactions Practice Group and a member of the Life Sciences Practice Group.

Advanced Life Sciences has named Richard Reck and Scott Meadow to its board of directors.

Syngenta announced that Heinz Imhof has decided to resign as chairman due to health reasons. The board has appointed Martin Taylor, currently vice chairman, as non-executive chairman. Rupert Gasser has been appointed vice chairman.

GlobeImmune has named Carl H. June, MD, to its scientific advisory board.

Dr. Joachim-Friedrich Kapp has been appointed to Titan Pharmaceuticals' board of directors.
