Blog: FDA pick could be between Califf, Sharfstein

The White House is expected to announce its pick for the FDA soon, and that has analysts working overtime trying to handicap the race for the top job. In Vivo is tapping Duke cardiologist Robert Califf and Baltimore Health Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein as front runners. Both have been formally interviewed. And former New York City health commissioner Margaret Hamburg may also be in the running.

"I know the President hopes in the next few days to announce a pick for commissioner at FDA," Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said January 30. Presumably they're taking a little extra time to review some tax returns.
