Big demand for experimental bird flu vaccines

Demand for any kind of protection from bird flu is high, and a host of big biopharma names are lining up new vaccines for sale. Sanofi has had to balance the need for seasonal vaccines against anxious demands for its H5N1 vaccine. And GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis are also pushing new bird flu vaccine development projects. Australia's CSL and Baxter International have programs in place as well. But even as new vaccines become available, there is still plenty of uncertainties over how much will be needed and whether they will prove to be effective. What is absolutely certain, though, is that for now, they won't have an problem finding customers. Countries are stockpiling whatever supplies they can find.
