Tools

Thomson Scientific has released “Who is making the Biggest Splash?,” a quarterly review of scientific literature on drugs and therapies. The report takes an objective look the quantity and quality of materials published by pharmas and other research institutions. According to the research firm, Novartis has snatched the lead from GSK, which has dominated the ranking since June of 2006. And the Novartis team sure has been busy: Researchers affiliated with the company issued 82 articles, abstracts or scientific posters between April and June 2007.

Rounding out the top five were AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Glaxo dropped to fourth from the top slot, with 18 less sources than Novartis. Noticeably absent from the report were biotech companies, none of which made the top ten. However, overall Thomson researcher were impressed with the quality of published research last quarter. “We continue to observe the generally robust nature of the scientific materials published in the leading information resources that healthcare professionals read. Our analyses continue to find that many pharmaceutical companies have good grounds for saying what they say, and say it well.”
