Trend: Pharma slow to expand in India, China

An Ernst & Young poll released today underscores big pharma's misgivings about expansion in India and China, two potentially huge markets for drug makers. Two-thirds of 358 senior pharma executives said that their companies spent under $50 million in India or China. Pharmaceutical companies are slow to expand to these areas due to concerns of counterfeit products and lax intellectual property laws. However, with constant criticism of high drug prices, the promise of lower drug development costs in these countries could prove to be an irresistible lure.
