Surgeons say Bayer's aprotinin is unsafe

In a new report in the New England Journal of Medicine, heart surgeons say that the drug aprotinin--which is sold by Bayer under the brand name Trasylol to reduce bleeding during surgery--increased the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure in a new study and should be replaced by other drugs that are safer. Bayer said in a statement that it believes the drug is safe and effective.
