Studies underscore safety, effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines

Two major new studies being published in the New England Journal of Medicine conclude that two new vaccines for rotavirus proved effective in reducing the number of deaths among infants from diarrhea. The trials enrolled more than 60,000 children each to examine the effects of the vaccines, which are being produced by Merck and GlaxoSmithKline. An earlier vaccine for rotavirus was pulled from the market after it was linked to dangerous bowel obstructions in one in 10,000 infants.
