SPOTLIGHT: FDA OKs three-in-one AIDS drug

The FDA has approved Atripla, a three-in-one AIDS drug that is expected to offer a significant improvement in compliance among patients. Atripla combines Viread, Emtriva and Sustiva from Gilead Sciences and Bristol-Myers Squibb, standard therapies used to protect AIDS patients. The combined therapy will cost $1,100 a month. But, many patients are expected to benefit by reducing their co-payments. By improving overall compliance, researchers say that they can also reduce the number of drug-resistant strains that emerge.
