Sepracor releases positive data on arformoterol
Shares of Sepracor were buoyed after the drug discoverer announced that Phase III data for its experimental drug for smoker's cough demonstrated that the drug was as effective as GSK's Serevent but took effect much more quickly. Sepracor's inhaled drug arformoterol is a fine mist version of the drug formoterol and is delivered through a nebulizer. Existing therapies use dry powder administered with an inhaler. Up to 88 percent of the patients in the trial taking arformoterol experienced at least a 10 percent improvement in lung activity compared to 48 percent of the patients taking a placebo and 58 percent who took the GSK therapy. The effect was also achieved in 4 to 14 minutes for arformoterol, compared to 132 minutes for Serevent.
