San Diego biotechs expanding ties to China

These days in biotechnology, if you're not already tied in some way to China, you're giving it some serious thought. Over the last few years, San Diego's biotech community has steadily expanded its contacts with researchers in Beijing and Shanghai. Executives from Invitrogen and other biotechs routinely make the 12-hour commute, expanding their footprint in a country that promises to play a leading role in drug development.

"Nowadays you would be hard-pressed to find a decent local biotech that is not using a (foreign contract research organization) or at least seriously considering using a company from China or India," Zhu Shen, head of business development at San Diego-based Immusol, told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
