Resveratrol potential fires interest in longevity drugs

Interest in longevity drugs continues to grow as new research points to the tonic effects of resveratrol. The New York Times notes that some scientists have become so enamored by the potential of the ingredient they have begun to take it in pill form. And the implications could be huge for any developer like Sirtris.

"The upside is so huge that if we are right, the company that dominates the sirtuin space could dominate the pharmaceutical industry and change medicine," said Dr. David Sinclair of the Harvard Medical School, a co-founder of the company.

If small doeses of resveratrol (i.e. 400 mg per day) are effective in treating the diseases of aging, I really don't see the need to go through a docotor to buy a pharmaceutical company's product. I can buy a dietary supplement and get 400 mg of pure resveratrol for less than 50 cents per pill. Not the 3 to 4 dollars sirtris is talking about.

Resveratrol can help you to lead a long and healthy life so says Dr. Oz.

Resveratrol Supplements can help you control your weight naturally
by increasing energy, reducing cravings, and limiting your appetite.
According to Wikipedia, Consumer Lab, an independent dietary
supplement and over the counter products evaluation organization,
published a report on 13 November 2007 on the popular resveratrol
supplements. The organization reported that there exists a wide range
in quality, dose, and price among the 13 resveratrol products
evaluated. The actual amount of resveratrol contained in the
different brands range from 2.2mg for Revatrol, which claimed to have
400mg of "Red Wine Grape Complex", to 500mg for Biotivia.com Transmax,
which is consistent with the amount claimed on the product's label.
Prices per 100mg of resveratrol ranged from less than $.30 for
products made by Biotivia.com, jarrow, and country life, to a high of
$45.27 for the Revatrol brand. None of the products tested were found
to have significant levels of heavy metals or other contaminants.

Since the Dr. Sinclair study was published in Nature a hoard of fly by night companies have sprung up selling resveratrol. One even makes his capsules in a rented house in Florida. Consumer Lab, an independent authority, tested the major brands and found many lacking in content and quality. The ones that passed their evaluation were Biotivia, Transmax and Bioforte. Products which failed the evaluation included Life Extension Co. with only 26% of their claimed resveratrol and Revatrol which had virtually no trans-resveratrol in its supplement. Most of the suspect companies declined to have their products tested and some have posted their own test results on their sites in place of independent tests. The ConsumerLab test results are available on their web site.
