Researchers say Gleevec linked to heart damage
A team of researchers has concluded that the cancer drug Gleevec may cause serious heart damage. They found evidence that imatinib was linked to the heart failure experienced by 10 patients. But rather than stop taking the leukemia treatment, the scientists say that patients and doctors need to carefully monitor for heart damage. Gleevec has proven to be a very powerful therapy for combating chronic myelogenous leukemia by halting the work of a protein called Bcr-Abl.
