Raloxifene cuts breast cancer risk in half

A study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute has determined that the drug raloxifene--sold as Evista--halves the risk of invasive breast cancer for women who have a high risk of the disease. That response rate is as good as tamoxifen, and Evista may have fewer side effects. Half a million women in the U.S. take raloxifene for osteoporosis. Eli Lilly is expected to apply for FDA approval to market raloxifene to postmenopausal women who have a high risk of breast cancer.
