Phase 3 data supports Gardasil's effectiveness against cervical cancer

Merck reported that a late-stage trial of Gardasil for cervical cancer demonstrated 100 percent effectiveness in preventing early stage cancers and precancerous lesions linked to two of the most common HPV strains that cause the disease. The disease kills about 3,700 women each year, and the virus is carried by 20 million people in the US. The trial data leaves Merck on schedule to file for regulatory approval by the end of the year.
