During a conversation with the Wall Street Journal's Health Blog, Pfizer CEO Jeffrey Kindler (photo) laid out three simple steps he believe will lead the more productive R&D. First, groups should be organized into departments of no more than 100 to 150 researchers--few enough that communication among staff is easy. Each group, according to Kindler, should be headed up by a Chief Science Officer who's prominent in his or her field of research. Finally, the groups should be left alone to operate how they please.
