Pfizer gains rights to Bayer compounds
Pfizer has gained the worldwide rights to a class of compounds being developed by Bayer to treat diabetes and obesity. The compounds are DGAT-1 inhibitors which modify lipid metabolism. The lead compound of the group--BAY 74-4113--is currently in Phase I trials. Bayer gains an up-front payment, milestones and royalties, but the exact terms of the deal were not released.
"This licensing agreement with Pfizer validates the quality of our expertise in research," says Dr. Gunnar Riemann, head of Bayer HealthCare's pharmaceuticals division. "Our decision to out-license this promising candidate is in line with our focus on specialty pharmaceuticals."
