One-stop shop created for federally subsidized embryonic stem cells

A Wisconsin research group has set up a "one-stop-shop" for embryonic stem cells under a federal plan to make them available at a lower cost. WiCell Research Institute said the goal is to make all the embryonic stem cell lines that qualify for federal research support available from one place. President Bush limited federal support of embryonic stem cell research to 78 existing lines. But researchers say that many of those lines have deteriorated, leaving only 22 for research. A number of states, such as California, have responded by subsidizing ambitious new stem cell programs that aren't limited to the federal lineup.
