Merck's new strategy to develop a combination therapy for cholesterol was bad news for Kos Pharmaceuticals, which saw its stock plunge as investors weighed the likelihood that Merck would overtake its lead drug Niaspin. Analysts also reacted negatively to Kos' announcement that Niaspin sales had slowed in November.
