Malaysia beefs up efforts to attract biotech

The Malaysian government is backing its bid to broaden the country's biotech base with $3 billion for R&D and enhanced healthcare. And it believes that working more closely with Indian developers could be a key to its success.

Selvam Ramaraj from the country's biotech development agency, BioNexus, says that the country wants to create a two-way relationship with the subcontinent, exploring new opportunities in India while looking for Indian companies interested in expanding in Malaysia.

"We do not foresee any significant claw back in terms of growth plans in the next 12 months," said Selvam Ramaraj. The country's support programs include tax exemption programs, encouraging global investors and a program to bring in "knowledge workers."
