KAI inks $340M licensing deal for angioplasty therapy

KAI Pharmaceuticals will pocket $20 million up front from a new licensing deal with Daiichi Sankyo for the experimental KAI-9803. KAI also stands to gain another $20 million in R&D funds along with up to $300 million more for reaching specified milestones in its development. Researchers believe that KAI-9803 can reduce the damage that can be caused by reperfusion during angioplasty, a process for reopening blocked blood vessels. KAI was granted fast-track status for the therapy and recently kicked off a Phase I/II safety and efficacy trial.
