Inovio licenses DNA vaccine tech to Wyeth

Inovio Biomedical will pocket a $4.5 million up front fee and up to $60 million in milestones after inking a deal to let Wyeth use its DNA delivery technology for certain DNA vaccines in development. The San Diego-based biotech has been developing the electroporation technology to make a new generation of DNA vaccines effective. The deal underscores not only the growing importance of DNA vaccines but the whole vaccine industry, which has been boosted by a drive to create more efficient technologies.

"We believe this speaks to the enabling capabilities of our technology, the breadth of our clinical experience as well as the strength of our DNA electroporation patent estate," stated Avtar Dhillon, MD, president and CEO of Inovio. "We remain committed to commercializing our delivery technology with a top-tier vaccine company such as Wyeth as we strive to build the world's leading DNA vaccine delivery franchise."
