GSK spins off Tempero in Mass.

Xconomy reports that GlaxoSmithKline has spun-off Tempero Pharmaceuticals from GSK's Immuno-Inflammation Centre of Excellence in Drug Discovery. The new company, which will be based in biotech hotbed Caimbridge, MA, will focus on "advances in T-cell biology...to develop novel medicines for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases." There's no indication about how many people the spin-off will employ, or what specific projects it will be working on.

The new company will be headed by Spiros Jamas, who managed the T-cell research unit while it was part of GSK. The company didn't say why it's not developing the technology itself, though Xconomy notes that GSK has made an effort to keep its drug R&D efforts divided into small, flexible units. When contacted with questions, a spokesperson told FierceBiotech that more information on the company would be available "in a couple of months."
