Gilead notes success of trial for cystic fibrosis

Gilead Sciences says that a late-stage study of aztreonam lysine met its primary goal for cystic fibrosis after 28 days of treatment. Patients taking the drug demonstrated a significant improvement in respiratory function compared to a placebo. In April the company announced that a late-stage trial produced data showing that the drug reduced the need for antibiotics. In cystic fibrosis, the lungs of patients can't be cleared of mucus, creating fertile territory for infections. Gilead says it plans to seek marketing approval from the FDA in the last half of this year.
