Gentium wins orphan drug status for liver therapy
Italy's Gentium has won orphan drug status for its lead drug candidate, Defibrotide. The drug is intended to treat the damage done by radiation therapy to blood vessel cells, when small veins in the liver are blocked. That condition can cause liver failure. The drug is in Phase III.
