FDA panel backs Novartis' Exjade for removing iron

An expert panel at the FDA has backed Novartis' application for Exjade for anemia patients who suffer from excess iron. The panel said that despite weak data, the drug did demonstrate its effectiveness in removing iron. The experts also recommended follow-up studies to track the safety of the drug if it is approved for marketing. The FDA is not bound by the panel's recommendation but typically follows it. The drug is currently under review in Europe, Canada and other regions of the world.
