Enrollment is suspended in Avastin trial, Genentech shares slide

Shares of Genentech took a hit this morning after researchers announced they were halting enrollment in a Phase II trial of Avastin for ovarian cancer. Five of 44 patients in the study had a perforation in their gastrointestinal tract. People taking the drug will be informed of the risk and may be taken off the drug. Avastin is currently approved for colorectal cancer but has demonstrated widespread utility in other cancers.
