One of the year's biggest stories in the exciting field of stem cell research is looking increasingly as if it was based--at least in part--on fraud. And in science, even a little fraud will poison the entire well of data. We will eventually learn what South Korea's Dr. Hwang reported truthfully and what was faked. In the meantime, it's important to keep in mind that despite this bad news, stem cell research offers some of the most promising experimental therapies for what ails the human body. Given the stunning reversal, it's doubly disappointing that California's $3 billion stem cell program remains mired in court. Perhaps we aren't as close to easily matching individual's stem cells as we had believed. But despite all the controversies that this field provokes, the ultimate goals deserve broad-based support in the biotech community. - John Carroll
