Celera closing up shop in Rockville

In what the Washington Business Journal describes as the "end of an era," Celera is shuttering its remaining 41,000-square-foot facility in Rockville, MD and laying off 20 of its 25 local staffers.

The move will close the curtain on what was once the Washington D.C. region's largest biotech operation. Celera employed 550 people in its heyday, taking a leading role in mapping the human genome. But recently the company moved its headquarters to Alameda, CA as it transforms itself more into a marketing operation.

After these new moves, at most only one or two employees for Celera will remain in the D.C. area.
