Cancer groups compete for research funds

With the lid on federal research spending, competition for any available money has been heating up among more than 1,000 advocacy groups, according to the Wall Street Journal. Officials at the American Cancer Society are warning that donors are being approached too often from too many groups. And lobbying lawmakers for funds has reached fever pitch.

Tighter funding is forcing the Society to set priorities, and it's trying to direct more money to younger scientists who can no longer tap the NCI for a grant. More and more cancer advocacy groups are being formed, adding even more competition in the scramble for cash.
