Calif. stem cell agency loses president in row
There's trouble brewing in the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Stem cell agency President Zach Hall has accelerated his plans to resign, saying he's grown concerned over the internal debate over the way it plans to provide $300 million for new lab construction. Hall also has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and says his prognosis is good. A recent meeting of officials over the agency's timetable for handing out the money was roiled by what Hall termed a "contentious and occasionally personal tone." Hall had planned to resign in June. The stem cell agency is possibly just one court ruling away from gaining control of $3 billion in funds to support embryonic stem cell research in the state and has gained millions in loans and grants to get started.
