BIO heralds rules on genetically designed animals

Tools

The FDA has issued new rules governing the sale of products developed from genetically engineered animals--a field that includes the use of animals to produce lower cost therapeutics. The agency says that before any such product is approved for sale it will be subjected to an independent committee review. An exception is being made for research animals. "This system will ensure the products made available through this science will go through a rigorous and transparent review process before being approved for the marketplace," said Barbara Glenn, a senior scientific adviser with the Biotechnology Industry Organization.
