Genomic HealthGenomic Health
Based: Redwood City, CA
Founded: 2000

Why it was Fierce in 2004: Genomic Health researchers were tracking the molecular signatures of tumors in evaluating the likelihood of disease recurrence and patients' response to treatment. The company believed its work could revolutionize cancer care by using genomic research to diagnose patients.

Where are they now?: In 2006 Genomic Health raised $54 million in an IPO. The company makes Oncotype DX Breast Cancer Assay, a test that analyzes the expression level of 21 genes in a woman's breast tumor sample. Physicians use the test to predict a patient's likelihood to benefit from chemotherapy as well as her risk of experiencing a disease recurrence.
