Innovation in container closure systems and aseptic processing for ATMPs
The pharmaceutical landscape is shifting from blockbuster drugs to personalized treatments, such as advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), which include cell and gene therapies, mRNA and LNP therapeutics, and tissue-engineered products. ATMPs currently dominate drug discovery and the early pipeline, which suggests many of them are likely to become commercially available in the coming years.
However, these high-value, low-volume drugs have stringent cold storage requirements, which pose manufacturing challenges related to packaging and aseptic filling solutions. As the industry is still largely focused on traditional marketed therapeutics, the advent of ATMPs is driving a need for innovation in vial containment and container closure systems that ensure product integrity, safety and efficiency.
