Scoop: Admit it. Restoration Robotics' ARTAS system actually seems kind of cool. A physician guides the computer-assisted device--which includes an image-guided robotic arm--to harvest hair follicles during hair restoration procedures. The technology drew enough attention to attract $41 million in series C financing in early August, from both new and existing investors. Jim McCollum, president and CEO, has big plans for the new funding, which comes on top of nearly $30 million in previous funding dating back to 2006, according to VentureDeal.com. He explained in a statement that Restoration Robotics will use the funding to commercialize ARTAS and launch it in the U.S. market, after the FDA's 510(k) clearance of the product in April. At least 35 million men in the U.S. alone have pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia, according to the company. But McCollum also sees ARTAS as having the potential to "transform the global hair restoration market."
