Company: Danaher ($DHR)
Headquarters: Washington, D.C.
Med Tech R&D budget 2012: $494 million

The bottom line: Danaher has focused steadily on boosting R&D efforts for med tech product development, spending $494 million in 2012, a nice boost from $419 million in 2011 and $266 million in research spending in 2010. That investment helped, in part, make the company one of last year's top diagnostics operations in terms of sales. And Danaher boosted its R&D prowess by growing through acquisitions, including its $6.8 billion deal to buy Beckman Coulter in 2011 for $6.8 billion. That growth continued last fall with Danaher's $338 million buyout of diagnostics company Iris International, and this winter with its purchase of Quest Diagnostics' ($DGX) HemoCue business for $300 million.
