Finalized in early 2011, Takeda Pharmaceutical Industries' deal with Covance ($CVD) and Quintiles is one that embraces virtual outsourcing when it comes to drug development. According to an Outsourcing-Pharma story, when the partnership was announced Takeda's aim was to implement a "global program-level sourcing strategy" to improve efficacy. With that in mind, the virtual outsourcing partnership provided no fuss for either party: Takeda gained full access to both CROs development and lab services, while Covance and Quintiles were given resources and pipeline access in turn.

While Takeda, Covance and Quintiles are among the biggest and best in their respective fields, the virtual business model can work with smaller CROs and pharma companies without a large working infrastructure.
