A 10-year-old Pakistani boy who can walk on coals has helped researchers identify a gene that plays a key role in the identification of pain. Researchers found that a genetic mutation knocks out the physical recognition of pain, opening a potential pathway to a new therapy to block the sensation of pain. The genetic mutation was evident in other members of the boy's family as well. Researchers cautioned, though, that any new therapy that could block pain shouldn't be complete, noting that pain is an essential part of the body's warning system.
